If you speak to those Sinhala people who says things like Sinhala is the most advance language in the world, or it can write down any sound, etc…, you will quickly find they are very bad at Sinhala language. I’m very bad at Sinhala and also I have seen very few Sinhala people who can speak beautiful Sinhala. Knowing Sinhala words do not make you good at Sinhala language or having a kitchen does not make you a good cook.
Absolutely true. The concept we have, somehow we are not allowed make mistake with English is the main reason we reject learning English in the first place. If you don’t mind, I also like to add other reason; poor knowledge of Sinhala makes English hard to learn. My English teacher told us, “learn to think in proper Sinhala (mother language) first, and convert those words in closest English words you know”. It was like magic. Believe it or not, the bit of Sinhala Language I know now, I learned from my English teacher.
Here is my two cents. Learn 250 English words. That is all you need to start communicating in English. Watch English movies with subtitle on. And listen. And Chat in English. You don’t have to be shy about chatting bad English. They don’t know who you are.

@ Sam, You must be able to speak in your mother tongue. If not it is a crime. You as a person operate in that language. In a certain post graduate course I was following this happened. We had students from several nationalities such as Indian, Sri Lankan Sinhalese, Chinese, German and so on. It was found that the non-English students were slow in certain reactions. We investigated it ourselves with a unbelievable brain storm. We sound this fact ” ANY INDIVIDUAL WHEN A SIMPLE PROBLEM IS GIVEN IT IS SOLVED IN THE MIND THROUGH THE INDIVIDUAL’S MOTHER TONGUE. That is to say if you were given a simple problem such as 12 x 12 , first the problem is translated in the mind to your own mother tongue ‘the operating language’ . Then it is computed in the mother tongue, After computing it is translated again to the language of the original question. The delay noted was the time taken for translation-computing-translation. It is not a shame to make mistakes in apeaking another language other than your mother tongue, because it is not your mother tongue. Unfortunately some Sri Lankan Sinhalese make a big issue of this and harrass innocent people who give an attempt to speak English !!!

Indeed it is true. According to Steven Pinker, our brain creates individual circuits to each experience we had, and each word mapped with each of those circuits. And that enable each word to fire those circuits enabling us to share feelings using words. Theoretically every word is a metaphor. And every metaphor is an experience. So the problem with other language is, it take quite some times for those words map with each experience natively and some words never map correctly since there are no such experience in the brain.
So at the same time, even if we know Sinhala words and know how to make a sentence out of it, that do not mean we really know the Language. As an example, Martin Wikramasinha writes in Viragaya (as I remember), “මගේ හදවත දවා ගිය හේනක් වැනිය.” If you have not ever seen a dark, lifeless, lonely burned “Hena”, you won’t understand the real meaning (feeling) of it – but we know those words as words. My point is, words alone do not create the language. And that is why I say most of us are not good at Sinhala.
If you ever look at Rosetta Stone language software, you will find they teach languages using just experiences (pictures, sound, etc..), without using any words from the mother tongue and it is superb fast.
Nice talk. Agree with you 100%
